Waterloo is a village of about 5100 people, located between Geneva and Seneca Falls on Route 5 and 20. Waterloo Premium Outlets, a large plaza style shopping mall, is located northwest of Waterloo by the Thruway. It is no farther from Geneva than it is Waterloo.
Waterloo was home to the first observance of Memorial Day on May 5, 1866, and is hence also known as "The Birthplace of Memorial Day." The friendship between General John Murray, a distinguished citizen of Waterloo, and General John A. Logan, who helped bring attention to the event nationwide, was likely a factor in the holiday's growth.
