Skaneateles (pronounced "skinny atlas") Lake, sometimes refered to as "The Roof Garden of the Lakes", is the highest of the Finger Lakes at 863 feet. Its name comes from one of the local Iroquois languages, meaning long lake. Skaneateles Lake is 17 miles long, an average of .75 miles wide, and has a maximum depth of 315 feet. The cleanest of the Finger Lakes, its water is so pure that Syracuse and other villages use its water unfiltered. William Henry Seward called it "The most beautiful body of water in the world." The City of Syracuse spends about 2.3 million dollars a year to protect lake quality.
The village of Skaneateles is located at the North end of the lake.
