Looking over Seneca Lake from Geneva
Seneca Lake is the second largest, and the deepest of the Finger Lakes, with Cayuga Lake being larger but shallower. It is over 600 feet deep at its deepest, which means the bottom is below sea level, as the surface elevation is about 450 feet. This makes the water of Seneca Lake remain fairly cool all summer and prevents it from freezing over in the Winter. On the ends, however, it freezes enough sometimes to allow ice fishing. Seneca Lake has about 4.2 trillion gallons of water in it.
Geneva is located on the North end of Seneca Lake and Watkins Glen is located on the South end.
Water quality Buoy[]
There is a YSI EMM-2500 Buoy Platform located in the north end of Seneca Lake roughly in the center. Its coordinates are: latitude: 42°49.13', longitude: 76°57.61'. The buoy has cellular modem communications and measures wind speed and direction, relative humidity, air temperature, barometric pressure, light intensity, and the water's depth and temperature, conductivity, turbidity, and chlorophyll-a levels.
The buoy was initially deployed in June 2006. The water depth where it is located is about 60 metres (200 ft)
